How to password-protect PDFs in bulk

Keep your password safe. There is no way to recover it, for you or for us.
AES-256 is the strongest protection a PDF can have, and it opens in every modern PDF reader (Adobe, Chrome, Edge, Safari, Preview and phone apps).
Restrictions are respected by most PDF readers, but they are weaker than the open password. Use the open password for anything truly private.
Use a long password. Several words, like blue-river-candle-42, is easy to remember and hard to guess.
PDFs that already have a password must be unlocked first.
