How words are counted
- A word is any run of letters or numbers, so don't, e-mail and 2024 each count as one, the same way Microsoft Word counts them.
- Chinese and Japanese characters are counted one by one, like Word does.
- Word documents: tracked deletions and hidden field codes are left out. Headers, footers, footnotes and comments are only counted if you tick the box.
- PowerPoint: text on every slide, with speaker notes if you tick the box.
- Subtitles (SRT/VTT): the timings and numbers are skipped, only the spoken lines are counted.
- Scanned PDFs have no text to count. Use the Image to Text (OCR) tool first.
Reading time assumes 238 words a minute, the average for adults reading non-fiction.
